Azithromycin, sometimes known by the brand name Zithromax, is an antibiotic that is used to treat multiple bacterial infections. It was approved by the EMA in the 80s and has since become available in many different forms, including tablets, liquid and eye drops.
It works by preventing the bacterial cells from multiplying. This process eventually kills the bacteria and treats the infection.
It is most commonly prescribed to treat sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including:
It can also treat other bacterial infections, including middle ear infections, pneumonia and strep throat.
You can order Azithromycin at euroClinix to treat chlamydia, ureaplasma urealyticum and NSU.
According to clinical guidelines, Azithromycin must be taken with Doxycycline to treat Mycoplasma genitalium. Find out more about our Mycoplasma genitalium treatment pack.
Note: Azithromycin is generally recommended as a second-line treatment for STIs if the first-line treatment Doxycycline hasn’t worked.
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic, which means it targets the bacteria causing the infection.
This is how Azithromycin treats infections and any symptoms.
Azithromycin has unique benefits when it comes to treating STIs.
Azithromycin stays in your system for up to 15 days after your last dose, which means you don’t have to take it for as long as other antibiotics.
Azithromycin can treat the infection in 2 days when taken correctly. Up to 97% of patients are successfully treated after one course of Azithromycin.
Azithromycin can treat a wide range of bacterial infections, not just STIs. It can be used to treat pneumonia, sinusitis, ear infections and skin infections.
Research shows that Azithromycin is an effective treatment for STIs when used correctly.
One study looked at how effective Azithromycin was when treating chlamydia and gonorrhoea.
Chlamydia: 96% treatment success
Gonorrhoea: 92% treatment success
Treatment failure generally caused by patient error
Low risk: 10 out of 113 patients
A more recent study also compared Azithromycin and Doxycycline treatment for chlamydia. They found that 97% of people who took Azithromycin were completely treated for chlamydia, and there was no significant difference between Azithromycin and Doxycycline.
However, unfortunately, Azithromycin resistance has increased. A report released by the UK Health Security Agency in 2023 found that Azithromycin resistance to gonorrhoea had increased from 15.1% to 20.4%. So, this is why it is only prescribed if another antibiotic is unsuitable.
Azithromycin is suitable for most people. However, you should always ask your doctor if you have another medical condition or take any other medication.
You can take Azithromycin if you have tested positive for an STI such as chlamydia or NSU and Doxycycline (the first-line treatment) has not worked.
Azithromycin is more susceptible to antibiotic resistance and therefore is generally offered as a second-line treatment.
Do not take Azithromycin if you are:

You must take Azithromycin exactly as prescribed to ensure you treat the infection completely and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
Azithromycin is available as a 500 mg dose. The treatment course for chlamydia, ureaplasma and non-specific urethritis only lasts for 3 days.

Swallow each tablet with half a glass of water. Do not crush, chew or split tablets. Azithromycin can be taken with or without food.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, skip the missed dose if it’s nearly time for your next dose. Doses should be at least 12 hours apart.
Do not take a double dose to account for a missed dose.
You must take Azithromycin for 3 days to treat the infection completely. This is how long Azithromycin takes to work. Do not stop taking it sooner, even if you start to feel better.
Stopping treatment early could cause the infection to come back and the antibiotics to become less effective over time.
